Horace Walpole
Horace Walpole, 1717 – 1798, English writer and antiquarian.
Horace Walpole, the youngest son of England’s longest ruling Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, attended Eton and Cambridge. After his schooling , he travelled on the continent for two years with the poet and friend Thomas Gray visiting France, Switzerland and Italy returning to take a seat in Parliament in 1741. In 1747 he bought a house in Twickenham outside London; he dedicated his entire life turning it into a fantastic neo gothic castle called Strawberry Hill. There he housed one of the most extensive and eclectic collections of art in England.
Walpole is best known for writing the first gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto in 1765. The scenery of the plot is inspired by Strawberry Hill itself.

Walpole, il figlio più giovane del primo ministro più longevo della storia inglese, Sir Robert Walpole, frequentò Eton e Cambridge. Una volta terminata l’istruzione scolastica, egli girò l’Europa per due anni con il poeta e amico Thomas Gray visitando la Francia, la Svizzera e l’Italia ritornando poi per avere un seggio in parlamento nel 174. Nel 1747 comprò una casa a Twickenham vicino Londra; Egli dedicò tutta la sua vita trasformandola in un fantastico castello neo gotico di nome Strawberry Hill. Lì, egli allestì una delle collezioni d’arte più grandi ed eclettiche di tutta l’Inghilterra.
Walpole è meglio conosciuto per aver scritto il primo romanzo gotico, Il Castello di Otranto, nel 1765 . Lo scenario dell’intreccio è ispirato allo stesso Strawberry Hill.
